“URGE | SATISFACTION” PAINTING

Certainly I was not the first to have the urge to connect the dots of a Damien Hirst SPOT painting.

For several years, I’d enjoyed the highly promoted colorful SPOT paintings of the more famed contemporary artist Damien Hirst. Being the consummate draftsperson, came the natural urge to connect the spots on these paintings with a big fat pencil.

Graffiti on a multi million dollar canvas? Only two options existed, buy one and or create one yourself. Not wanting to deface Hirst work and short of being invited for a collaboration, one day I made my own to humor myself and finally satisfied that urge.

In keeping with the authentic Damian Hirst SPOT paintings, another artist other than Damian Hirst in the scaled manor made these underlying artworks for my humorous pleasure. Concerned with quality, and notions of being archival, I used the finest Lascaux acrylics on canvas rather than household gloss paint.

After spending several days painstakingly crafting the SPOT painting, the moment of actually connecting the dots with a big fat pencil arrived. That moment of drawing on the painting was simultaneously scary, freeing and exhilarating!”

“Ah what amusement!”
